Macy's (formerly R.H. Macy & Co.) is an American mid-range department store chain. it is now owned by the Macy's Inc. corporation of Cincinnati, Ohio, which also owns the Bloomingdale's department stores chain. In terms of retail sales, Macy's is the largest department store company and the fifteenth largest retailer in the United States. There are 789 Macy's stores in the United States, Guam and Puerto Rico.
The first R.H. Macy & Co. store was opened on Sixth Avenue between 13th and 14th Streets, New York City in 1851. Its proprietor was Rowland Hussey Macy, originally from Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. A star has always formed part of the Macy's logo because Rowland Hussey Macy got a tattoo of a star while working on board a Nantucket whaling ship as a teenager.
Macy's flagship store is now located on Herald Square, Manhattan. It occupies an entire New York City block. It is still advertised as the largest department store in the world, although a Shinsegage department store in Busan, South Korea is now larger.
Since 1924, Macy's has organized the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. Balloons in the shapes of Peanuts characters have often appeared at the parades. Since 1975, Macy's has also organized New York City's Fourth of July fireworks.
